Description
Kai is a community formed with town houses and apartment towers. In the province of Colon lies the friendly and thriving town of Maria Chiquita. To really understand and enjoy the area’s history and what remnants of it still exist, you must go provincial. Colon is the Spanish word for Columbus, aptly named as Christopher Columbus’ vessels sought shelter in one of its ports during a great storm, on his final voyage to the New World. The “beautiful port” that Colombus took refuge in became known as Portobelo, the region later becoming the port of entry and exit for all of South America. Exchanges of merchandise were held as fairs lasting 30 to 60 days, turning this serene region into a place bustling with activity. These fairs continued until 1738 when the British captured the town, blowing up and dismantling the fortress.
In 1668, famed pirate Sir Henry Morgan successfully captured Portobelo by attacking Fort Santiago el Principe unexpectedly by land, not sea. He then captured the Spanish Garrison by using monks and nuns to place ladders against its walls. For two months Portobelo was thrown into a state of looting, debauchery and lechery.
Today tourists can visit a UNESCO heritage site that includes the ruins of Santiago and San Geronimo as well as the 1630 Customs House, the remains of the Church of La Merced and the Church of San Felipe, the last building to be erected by the Spaniards. Inside this church is a relic that is both priceless and beautiful. Magnificently carved in dark wood, the statue of Jesus of Nazareth, known as the Black Christ, makes a yearly trip through the city on the shoulders of 80 men, followed by a procession of candle carrying pilgrims, and is an event that must be experienced. These historic buildings and traditions make Portobelo one of Panama’s largest tourist zones.
